Festival of Nossa Senhora do Monte

The Nossa Senhora do Monte Festival is the biggest arraial (street party) on Madeira Island and it attracts thousands of devotees. In this popular festival held in honour of the patron saint of Madeira, Monte Parish is decorated with traditional festoons of colourful flowers. Food and beverage stalls are set up in the streets where you can sample the island’s traditional boiled sweets, beef skewers, regional drinks and baked dough dolls.

All through the night, people sing and dance to both traditional and modern rhythms, with the sacred and the profane in perfect harmony.
