Quinta Jardims do Lago, is a small, luxury hotel set in magnificent gardens. The old manor house was built in the eighteenth century and was the home of several prominent French and English families. During the Napoleonic wars General Beresford, Commander of the British forces on the island, chose it as his residence.

Today, it’s gardens are well worth visiting for its many beautiful species of trees and plants, its well manicured lawns, its ponds and fountains and above all for a sighting of the elusive turtle, Colombo (apparently this giant turtle has been a hotel resident for over fifty years).

We had tea by the swimming pool and were served by a smiling and very helpful waitress. I had scones and a pot of tea (two large and fluffy scones accompanied by two different jams). My friend, who is gluten intolerant, had the apple pie (no pastry) served with a refreshing sorbet. The tea is served in large teapots, and fine china. We both agreed that everything was delicious. Altogether a very enjoyable afternoon.
